Port Charlotte 12 (2004) Highland Laird Review

Hi everyone,

More from Bruichladdich today, this time the heavily peated Port Charlotte. This is an independent bottling from Highland Laird, a brand from Bartels Whisky.

It drew my attention because there are some older indies of Port Charlotte coming out (12-14), some with really good reviews and this struck me as being a good chance to get in on the action.

Port Charlotte 2004 Highland Laird 57.3%
Colour: Gold
Body: Full
Nose: A little fruity- banana, fairly classic smoke, nice balance, lemon, burnt pastry, burnt banana fritter. Slightly tropical.
Water: Better balance and opens up more.
Taste: Soft, there’s a complex lemon thing going on here, acidic lemon juice, then some earthy peat smoke comes through, then more lemon juice and peel.
Water: Banana then big mineral notes develop and take over.
Finish: A peaty burst, then more acidic lemon juice.
Aged 12 years from a Bourbon barrel. Quite acidic on the taste, not a bad thing at all but bit of a 2 note whisky on the taste (lemon and smoke), water helps to open it up though.
77/100

Thanks for reading!
