Ledaig 2004 Whisky Lounge & 2005 Douglas Laing Reviews

Oh good morrow!

It must be known to you by now that I rather have a little soft spot for an interesting little whisky hailing from the isle of Mull…
Ah yes, Ledaig!

A marvellous malt, gaining quite some traction amongst those in the know and those that can handle the intense flavours these whiskies often provide…
Quite by happenstance I managed to peruse two little thimbles of the stuff and will endeavour to lay bare my thoughts on these wondrous trinkets….

Ledaig 2004 The Whisky Lounge 58.1%
Colour: Straw
Body: Medium/Full
Nose: Light and very clean. Salty, sea spray, alcohol, seaweed and samphire. Not much of the complexity I would expect from a Ledaig from this vintage.
Taste: Salty, clean, intense, very very maritime, seaweed, samphire and some lemon citrus.
Finish: Long length. Intense, really a lot of the sea.
Bottled 2017 at 12 years old. Ah a shame. The maritime notes aren't really balanced here. Lacking something a lot of other Ledaig's of this vintage had. Only 30 bottles!
73/100

Ledaig 2005 Douglas Laing 48.4%
Colour: Gold
Body: Medium/Full
Nose: Soft smoke, dirty soot, clean salt, wool, old warehouse, tar. A little prickling alcohol.
Taste: Soft arrival, builds with soot and big smoke, right amount of dirt, tar and phenolic, then clove and spices. Great strength, very oily and viscous.
Finish: Medium/Long length. Vanilla burst and lovely smoke.
Bottled 2005 at 10 years old. Yeah, this is more like it. A real get your hands dirty Ledaig.
79/100

Fare thee well!
